Gastrells Primary School is supported by a Governing Body of 11 members drawn from a broad range of professional and community backgrounds. Collectively, governors bring expertise in business, IT, languages, logistics, law and education. The Board includes parent and staff representatives, alongside governors from the local community.

Governing Body Constitution

In accordance with the Instrument of Government (effective 12 May 2015), the Governing Body comprises:

  • 4 Parent Governors
  • 2 Local Authority Governors
  • 1 Staff Governor
  • The Headteacher
  • 3 Co-opted Governors

A total of 11 Governors.

Structure and Committee

The Governing Body operates through a committee structure and meets as a Full Governing Body at least six times each year. In addition, committees meet termly to focus on specific areas of responsibility.

Finance and Premises Committee

The Finance and Premises Committee oversees the financial management of the school. Its responsibilities include monitoring expenditure, approving the annual budget and agreeing the final accounts. The Committee also manages all aspects of the school premises, including capital bids for refurbishment and new building projects.

Role and Responsibilities

Governors are responsible for setting the strategic direction of the school and ensuring effective governance. Their core functions include:

  • Setting the vision and long-term priorities
  • Ensuring policies and procedures are robust and effective
  • Monitoring progress against agreed targets, including pupil attainment
  • Providing both constructive challenge and supportive support

Working closely with the Headteacher and staff, governors help ensure that every child receives a high-quality education in a safe, supportive environment where they feel valued and where learning is enjoyable. Alongside securing strong academic outcomes, the Governing Body is proud to support a school community that builds children’s confidence through encouragement, praise and opportunity.

Governors’ Pecuniary and Non-Pecuniary Interests

All governors are required to submit a written declaration each year outlining any financial or business interests. They must also disclose any relationships with school staff and confirm whether they hold governorships at other schools.

At the start of every governing board meeting, governors must declare any interests relating to items on the agenda that could compromise, or be perceived to compromise, their impartiality.

Transparency and Accountability

At Gastrells Primary School, we are committed to transparency and accountability in all aspects of our work, including financial management.

As part of this commitment, we confirm that no member of staff earns a salary in excess of £100,000 per year.

We adhere to strict regulations and guidance regarding salaries and remuneration, ensuring that public funds are managed responsibly and effectively.
