At Gastrells, our aim is for every child to leave school with a flying start to a life of learning through strong achievement in mathematics and a secure, deep understanding of mathematical concepts.

Mathematics is a creative and essential subject that helps us to understand and shape the world around us. We want all pupils to develop a positive attitude towards maths and a genuine curiosity about the subject.

We encourage resilience and determination, viewing mistakes and misconceptions as a vital part of the learning process. Children are challenged through rich and meaningful problems, allowing them to develop depth of understanding before moving on to new content.

Our mathematics curriculum is designed to develop four key skills:

  • Fluency – pupils develop a secure understanding of mathematical concepts and the ability to recall and apply knowledge quickly and accurately (see Year-by-Year Curriculum Maps).
  • Accurate calculation – children calculate confidently using both mental and written methods, supported by a strong understanding of number and number operations.
  • Reasoning – pupils follow lines of enquiry and explain their thinking, using accurate mathematical language to justify, argue and prove.
  • Problem solving – children apply their mathematical knowledge to a wide range of problems, including unfamiliar contexts, real-life situations and links across the curriculum.

Through this approach, we aim to develop confident, capable mathematicians who are well prepared for future learning.
