At Gastrells, we pride ourselves on being a school committed to developing children who are not only competent readers but who love reading and understand its importance. As a school we recognise how vital it is to develop a passion for reading in all of our children, to enable them to be successful learners, in not only English but, in all areas of the curriculum and to set them up for ‘a flying start to life of learning’.

Our aims for Reading:

  • When starting at Gastrells to ensure that all children quickly develop the early reading skills through the teaching of phonics.
  • To develop phonetic skills which lead to blending and reading fluently.
  • For all children to develop the skills, confidence and passion to develop a life-long love of reading.
  • To develop confident and competent readers which in turn creates competent and confident writers across the curriculum.
  • To ensure that reading is prioritised across all elements of the curriculum.
  • To engage children with a wide range of inclusive authors, genres and high quality texts.
  • Develop children’s confidence, fluency and independence as a reader when reading for different purposes
