At Gastrells we believe that every child should be able to express their thoughts and ideas confidently and creatively through their writing which in turns gives them the tools for ‘A flying start to a life of learning’. We aspire for every child to acquire a rich, wide vocabulary and a solid understanding of grammar and punctuation which they can apply to their writing. We believe that children should be able to write for a wide range of contexts and audiences where the purpose for writing is always clear. At Gastrells we recognise the importance of opportunities for oracy and believe that this should be at the heart of every stage of the writing process.

At Gastrells we structure our writing units around a number of different areas which we have outlined below.

  • We believe that great readers make great writers and therefore teach writing through the use of inclusive high quality challenging texts that are read in class and where possible link to our topics.
  • We believe in engaging children through opportunities and experiences that capture the children’s interest and imagination.
  • We believe that children should be able to write confidently for a range of purposes across the curriculum and therefore we look to teach writing through a range of cross curricular ways.

In addition to this we balance our writing units and extending writing with the core skills of writing such as handwriting, spelling and SPaG which focus on the technical and grammatical aspects of writing.
